Volunteering Events

We have a range of practical opportunities for people to get involved in volunteering at Skelton Grange - including wildlife surveys, training events and practical volunteer days.

Please see below for details and get in touch if you need any more information. We welcome new volunteers at all times, so please come along, but please get in touch to let us know if you're planning to come along to any of the events (there's a short registration form at the bottom of this page).

All events take place at Skelton Grange Environment Centre unless specified otherwise below.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult for all events.

Regular Friday Volunteering - The Green Team

Join the Green Team at Skelton Grange Environment Centre - regular opportunities for everyone to come along and help out with some practical tasks on our site. You don't need any experience, just enthusiasm!

  • Please arrive from 9:30am for cup of tea ready for a 10:00am start.
  • Generally sessions run until 3:30pm unless advertised otherwise.
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Wear old clothes that you don't mind getting mucky, and dress for the weather.

Friday 18th April - Good Friday - NO SESSION THIS WEEK

Friday 25th April - A bigger splash

Continuing work on our new pond area - with planting both in and around the pond, and work on the pond platform and paths. Also working on invasive species around the site and on the vegetable garden.

Friday 2nd May - The final splashdown!

The final stages (hopefully) of work on the new pond- finishing any work on planting, decking and paths as well as installing seating.There will also be a range of other jobs around the site including work on the vegetable garden.

Friday 9th May - A sense of spring

Springtime work on the sensory and herb gardens at the centre, as well as any finishing we need to do at the pond on the paths and seating to get it all set for any amphibians looking for a new home!

Friday 16th May - Building barriers

Work on fencing, and dead hedges at the centre to build wildlife friendlly barriers that keep visitors safe and the animals happy!

Friday 6th June - Banish the Balsam

We link into a city-wide push to deal with this invasive invader! A chance to make a difference helping clear Himalayan Balsam from the Skelton site before it has a chance to set seed for this year.

 

NEW - Monday - Food growing skills

We are starting a new monthly series of training days on a Monday that are centred around skills in growing food. We’ll be covering some allotment based skills in preparing the soil, thinking about crop rotation and sowing and transplanting seeds, as well as sessions on fruit trees, and fungi! The sessions will be hands on and we are happy for people to share their own ideas and experiences, but complete beginners are also very welcome!

  • Please arrive from 10:00am for a cup of tea and a 10:30am start.
  • Sessions run until 3:30/4pm .
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Wear old clothes that you don't mind getting mucky, and dress for the weather.

Wildlife Surveying

Our annual wildlife surveying programme continues with our spring amphibian surveys – timed to coincide with the breeding season for frogs, toads and newts. These are evening surveys as the work is best done by torchlight! Times may be updated nearer the event to coincide with nightfall.

  • Please arrive from at the time stated  for an introductory session including amphibian identification skills
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
  • Wrap up warm as we will be outside and keeping still! Bring a torch if you have one, although spares will be available at the centre
