Volunteering Events

We have a range of practical opportunities for people to get involved in volunteering at Skelton Grange - including wildlife surveys, training events and practical volunteer days.

Please see below for details and get in touch if you need any more information. We welcome new volunteers at all times, so please come along, but please get in touch to let us know if you're planning to come along to any of the events (there's a short registration form at the bottom of this page).

All events take place at Skelton Grange Environment Centre unless specified otherwise below.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult for all events.

Regular Friday Volunteering - The Green Team

Join the Green Team at Skelton Grange Environment Centre - regular opportunities for everyone to come along and help out with some practical tasks on our site. You don't need any experience, just enthusiasm!

  • Please arrive from 9:30am for cup of tea ready for a 10:00am start.
  • Generally sessions run until 3:30pm unless advertised otherwise.
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Wear old clothes that you don't mind getting mucky, and dress for the weather.

The Green Team - upcoming sessions and details

Friday 15th of August - Adventures in the Lost World

We'll be starting some tree care work to look after our young woodland in the wildest part of Skelton Grange - the infamous Lost World! Also some work maintaining paths and looking after the vegetable gardens.

Friday 22nd of August - Further Adventures in the Lost World

We'll be pushing on with work on our  young trees in the wildest part of Skelton Grange - the infamous Lost World! Also some work maintaining paths, removing Himalayan Balsam and looking after the vegetable gardens.

Friday 29th of August - One man went to mow

Use of a traditional scythe to cut the meadows - with training from Niels Corfield from Edible Cities. A really good chance to learn a traditional skill which is still very useful today.

Friday 5th of September - Woodland works

A day of woodland crafts and skills - with workshops on Bushcraft and Fire lighting Skills with our own Chris Ensor, Spoon Carving and green woodwork with site guru Lee Gibson and hazel hurdle making with Geoff Norton from Yorkshire Hurdles.  One not to miss! Food growing skills - second Monday of the month!

We are starting a new monthly series of training days on a Monday that are centred around skills in growing food. We’ll be covering some allotment based skills in preparing the soil, thinking about crop rotation and sowing and transplanting seeds, as well as sessions on fruit trees, and fungi! The sessions will be hands on and we are happy for people to share their own ideas and experiences, but complete beginners are also very welcome!

Monday 14th of July - Composting, feeding you plants and midsummer maintenance

July's session is going to be focussed on ways of feeding your plants, and making natural fertilisers, using compost, wormeries and comfrey or nettle tea. We'll also be doing some other seasonal jobs around the veg patch.

Monday 11th of August - Harvest time!

Tuesday 19th August 4pm -8:30pm - Harvest festival evening - an end of project celebration! Times to be confirmed.

Monday 8th September - Autumn days - end of season on the veg patch, and preparing for winter

Wildlife Surveying

Our annual wildlife surveying programme continues with bat and butterfly surveys this Summer. Some of these events are evening events as the animals are nocturnal! Times may be updated nearer the event to coincide with nightfall.

Wednesday 13th August - Totally bats!

An evening bat survey to find out more about some of the nocturnal residents of Skelton Grange. Includes the chance to use a bat detector!

Wednesday 20th August 11am - 1pm. Utterly Butterfly

An introduction to butterfly identification and surveying skills

CANCELLLED Thursday 21st August 6pm - 8pm, Friday 22nd August 9am - 12noon. Like Moths to a flame

Sorry, due to unforseen circumstances we have had to cancel our moth survey for this year, but we hope to plan one in for next Summer.

Wildlife surveying details

  • Please arrive from at the time stated  for an introductory session including survey skills
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
  • For the evening surveys - wrap up warm as we will be outside and keeping still! Bring a torch if you have one, although spares will be available at the centre
