Course information

Basic Conservation

An introduction for first-time volunteers to the tools used, types of work undertaken and what to expect on a TCV project.

Gardening

Aimed at beginners, or those who want to learn to garden in an environmentally friendly way, the sessions are two and a half hours long and each course will run for four weeks. These courses will take place throughout the year, focusing on different aspects of the gardening calendar. This will involve how to grow plants overwinter in our polytunnel, planting up containers for different times of the year, or wildlife gardening. You will learn a range of skills including sowing, pricking out, potting on, and pruning, and find out when to do these jobs for different plants. We will also look at soil management and making compost at different points throughout the year.

Basic Woodwork

This course introduces people to woodwork and encourages the learning of new skills in a friendly setting within a fully-fitted workshop. The four-session course enables individuals to make quality wood products such as basic garden planters, benches and small home furniture.

Further Woodwork

Developing the skills you learnt on Basic Woodwork. You will learn all the skills necessary to make your own toolbox. Five consecutive Fridays.

Natural Crafts

Learn a variety of traditional crafts from felt making, natural dying with plants and willow weaving. During this course we will be exploring the ancient craft of felt making to create a 3D shape, identifying plants suitable for dying, and weaving a willow flower. Each term will have a slightly different focus as we move through the seasons.

TCV Hollybush Short Course Training Programme is part-financed by the European Union and the Skills Funding Agency –  investing in jobs and skills, focusing on people who need the most support and helping them fulfil their potential.
