Restoring a legacy in our special landscape

People repairing a drystone wall

Dry stone walls contribute to the character of some of our most stunning landscapes in Northern Ireland.

Our Conservation Action Team in Coleraine has been helping to restore this legacy near Downhill in the Binevenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

They have been working on a farm where the ravages of time have left some gaping holes in these structures. Hopefully after they've carried out the repairs these much-loved walls will be standing proud for another hundred years.

The volunteers and Steps to Work placements really enjoyed learning this old skill and just being out in such a beautiful location.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency provides part-funding under the Natural Heritage Programme to the Coleraine team to carry out such landscape improvement projects in the AONBs in the North East.
