Student Annarose Mullan helping clear sea buckthorn

The Conservation Action Team based in Coleraine are licking their wounds after an arduous six-week battle to clear another 2500 square metres of dense stands of invasive Sea Buckthorn at the Lower Bann Estuary at Portstewart.

The work is part-funded by a grant from the NIEA Natural Heritage Grants Programme and part-funded by Portstewart Golf Club.

The Sea Buckthorn is advancing inexorably destroying the natural dune flora and also the character of the links golf course.

This is our third winter working on the site and it is just part of a rolling programme to eventually clear as much as possible of this very invasive plant.

After that effort, planting hedgerows for the rest of the winter will be a welcome relief!
