When the Council for Nature founded The Conservation Corps in January 1959, its aim was to get young people involved in practical conservation work.
Over the past 65 years, this work has continued, and we have emerged to become The Conservation Volunteers; and one thing remains the same: conservation volunteering is great for people, communities, and nature.
Since 1959, the UK has seen a dramatic decline in wildlife and is now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.
Data shows that over the past 50 years, wildlife species have declined by around 19% and nearly 1 in 6 UK species are now threatened with extinction. State of Nature Report 2023.
However, there is evidence that conservation projects are making a positive difference, by successfully reintroducing species and protecting different forms of wildlife.
Why support The Conservation Volunteers
Over the past 65 years, our staff and volunteers have transformed urban and rural green spaces around the country, creating wildlife habitats, protecting nature, and restoring the natural environment.
By taking on tasks such as clearing ponds, planting wildflowers, managing woodlands, improving waterways, and clearing litter and invasive species, they are helping to create safe homes for wildlife and giving nature the chance to thrive.
But we can only do this work with the support of people like you.
