Connecting people and green spaces

Butterfly biodiverse future header image

Wildlife in the UK is in crisis and our biodiversity levels are among the lowest in the world.

Why does this matter?

The UK has fewer types of plant and animal species compared to many other countries. This lower biodiversity makes our ecosystems more fragile in the face of climate change, and as a result, wildlife habitats are suffering, making it harder for nature to thrive.

You can help in the fight to increase biodiversity.

By donating to The Conservation Volunteers, you can help teams around the country to protect and restore natural habitats.

How TCV is making a difference

Our Biodiversity Action Teams work to protect and restore natural habitats through conservation activities such as trees and hedgerows, creating and maintaining ponds and waterways, controlling invasive species, and planting wildflower meadows – all of which help to increase biodiversity.

Through our work, our staff and volunteers protect and restore natural habitats helping native plant and wildlife species to thrive.

Research shows that conservation work is successful in helping to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

How you can make a difference in your green spaces

One way you can help to make a difference is by taking part in Citizen Science projects – from helping to monitor wildlife and trees to assisting in the recording of environmental data, there are many different ways you can get involved in community conservation projects. Find out more.

Or if you would like to make your garden more wildlife friendly, take a look at our free gardening for wildlife guide, which provides tips and guidance on how to make your green spaces a haven for nature. Find out more.

What is biodiversity and why does it matter?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of native species of plants, animals, bacteria and fungi that live in the varied habitats we have in the UK.

Biodiversity underpins everything humans need for survival – from fresh water to plants and medicines. To support the ecosystems we rely on, we need a wide variety of plant, animal and microorganisms to provide the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Donate today and help create a more biodiverse future.
