Wildlife in the UK is in crisis, with biodiversity levels among the lowest in the world. There is an urgent need for everyone to take action.
With wildlife populations declining and habitats under threat, it vital that we all take steps to support the protection and restoration of natural environments now.
Planting native trees and hedgerows helps to boost biodiversity
Planting trees and hedgerows is crucial for enhancing biodiversity. By planting native trees, we can not only help to provide essential habitats for local wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals, but also help in the struggle to combat climate change.
You can help by supporting the planting of more trees and hedgerows this year, by making a donation.
Why is planting trees important?

Provide wildlife habitats

Create wildlife corridors

Climate regulation

Reduce flooding risk

Improve soil health
- Native trees provide habitats for different species of wildlife including birds, insects and mammals
- Trees and hedgerows create essential corridors allowing wildlife to move safely and freely between landscapes
- Planting trees helps to cool and purify the air and create the conditions different wildlife species need to thrive
- Trees intercept rainfall and help water absorption, reducing the risk of flooding and helping to protect wildlife habitats
- Trees improve soil health which helps to support a wider, more diverse range of plant species
You can help to make a difference in the fight to increase biodiversity by supporting the planting of trees
In 2024-25, The Conservation Volunteers planted over 640,000 trees and hedgerows helping to protect and restore biodiversity in communities across the UK. A donation to TCV will not only support the planting of more trees and hedgerows but will also help to care for those that have already been planted. By taking action now, we can preserve the rich natural heritage of the UK for future generations and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

“We had a wonderful day planting our trees. Our trees will create new hedging for our community garden and create a wonderful habitat for all the wildlife that is living in our space now. The trees were amazing quality and we look forward to tending them and watching them grow.
Thank you for helping to make our garden a richer and more diverse space to be for people and wildlife.”
Cockburnspath & Cove Community Garden
“For years, residents just walked by and paid no attention to these gloomy patches. The promise of free trees from the TCV inspired us to get together, clear the areas and plant native species that will encourage wildlife, improve the environment and bring joy to everyone who passes. Thank you TCV for your 'I Dig Trees' initiative; it has helped strengthen our sense of community and increased our appreciation of the importance of biodiversity. Keep up the good work!”
