Remember a loved one header

Planting a tree in memory of someone special is a powerful way to remember a loved one.

It’s more than a tribute – it’s a living legacy that protects wildlife, restores nature and brings hope for the future.

Why Plant a Tree in Memory?

A lasting tribute: Planting a tree is a meaningful way to celebrate a life and keep a memory alive

A gift to the planet: As well as keeping a memory alive, planting a tree also supports wildlife, nature, and the planet

A part of something bigger: Your gift contributes to a wider effort to restore woodlands and create a greener future

Or consider making an annual donation to support the planting and caring of trees year after year.

Where your tree will be planted

This year, all memorial trees will be planted in beautiful woodlands in North Yorkshire, East Riding and Humber – areas carefully chosen for their rich natural heritage and potential for restoration.

Each tree will be planted and lovingly cared for by TCV volunteers and local community groups. Over the next five years, they'll nurture your tree to ensure it thrives and grows into a lasting legacy.

We only plant native UK species – such as Oak, Silver Birch and Hazel – selected to support local biodiversity, enrich habitats and benefit nature for generations to come.

Your tree will not only serve as a living tribute to your loved one – it will also become a vital wildlife habitat, help to improve air quality and absorb carbon, making a meaningful difference to the planet.

FAQs

Where will my tree be planted?

This year, all In Memory trees will be planted in woodlands managed by the Community Forest Trust. These include areas across Humber, East Riding, North Yorkshire, and the northeast up to Newcastle.

While we cannot provide the exact location of each individual tree, they will be planted in groups of at least 100 – increasing their ecological impact and giving them the best possible chance to thrive. Together, these trees will support nature, help mitigate the impacts of climate change, and grow into a lasting legacy for your loved one.

When will the trees be planted?

The trees will be planted in the new year before the end of this year’s tree planting season towards the end of February 2026. Planting trees in the winter gives young trees the best chance to establish roots before spring growth begins.

Who will plant the trees and will they be looked after once they are planted?

The trees will be planted by TCV’s experienced volunteers and trusted community groups. As with all trees planted by TCV, they will be cared for and maintained for the first five years of their life.

We take every step to give the trees the best start in life. However, nature can be unpredictable, and not all saplings will survive. Trees are living things, but we provide our planters with advice and guidance on quality planting, and the aftercare and maintenance to give each tree the best chance to thrive.

Will I be able to visit the tree I have planted?

Unfortunately, the trees will be planted on land privately owned by the Community Forest Trust, so individual visits aren’t possible.

However, you can be assured that your tree will be cared for and will play a vital role in supporting nature, increasing biodiversity, and making a lasting difference.

Can I dedicate my tree to someone or include a message?

Yes. You can include a personal message or dedication when you make your donation. Just tick the ‘Dedicate this donation’ box when making your donation. You can then name the person you are dedicating your donation to.

Will I receive anything to commemorate the tree planting?

You’ll receive a certificate that you can print out and personalise with your own message. We will also share a photo of the tree planting sites once the trees have all been planted. These will serve as a lasting reminder of your tribute and the positive impact it’s making.

To receive the certificate and photograph, you must opt-in to receive emails from The Conservation Volunteers. Once your donation has been processed, you will then receive an email with the certificate attached.

What types of trees will be planted?

We only plant native UK species such as Oak, Silver Birch and Hazel. You can see a full list of the trees selected to be planted this year here. These trees have all been carefully selected to support local biodiversity.
