Why Volunteering Is Important to You and Your Community

Volunteering is more than just giving time; it’s about making a tangible impact on our local green spaces and the volunteers themselves. It helps to:

  • Support environmental conservation and increase biodiversity
  • Enhance community well-being by providing quality green spaces
  • Boosts employee morale and job satisfaction
  • Foster a sense of purpose and belonging
  • Enhances company reputation and community relations
  • Develops new skills and strengthens team bonds

Most importantly, volunteering makes your staff happy! Volunteering has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health, increase feelings of fulfilment and crucially promote a sense of community and connection.

“There is a simple thing that can help support good mental health… nature. Nature can really help put things in perspective, take the pressure off and bring calm, wonder and joy to our daily lives.”

TCV’s Impact (with your support)

Each year, TCV works with approximately 90,000 people, transforming over 1,300 community green spaces.

Your team could join a movement of 8,728 corporate volunteers who, over the past year, swapped a day at the office for a day outdoors, contributing to the health of the UK’s community green spaces whilst boosting biodiversity. Together, these volunteers have planted trees and wildflower meadows, creating homes for wildlife, maintained woodland and hedgerows, removed invasive species, built stiles and footpaths and created local food growing projects. Their efforts ensure that communities can enjoy these green spaces, connect with nature, and improve their health and well-being.

Partner Testimonials

Sky

Why have you chosen to partner with TCV for corporate volunteering? Our partnership with The Conservation Volunteers began in 2019 after we launched our Sky Cares volunteering programme (focused on giving back to communities local to our colleagues) and we’ve volunteered with them every year since. With a range of sites including in London, Scotland, Newcastle and Leeds, there are opportunities for our colleagues based across the UK to take part in TCV volunteering. So far, over 1,500 Sky staff have volunteered over 11,000 hours with TCV.
What value does this initiative deliver to both your organisation and your employees? It’s great for Sky staff to get out of the office and into the fresh air with a big group of colleagues. Teams really bond and create strong working relationships while making a difference to green spaces for local communities to enjoy.
How have you found the experience of partnering with TCV, in terms of the booking process and logistics? We simply let TCV know the dates, locations and team size that we’re looking for and they get back to us with availability. After we’ve booked the events, TCV sends us all the information needed for the day (including meeting point, travel and facilities at the site) for us to pass on to our staff volunteers. It’s a straightforward process and TCV are happy to look at more sites for Sky staff to volunteer at so there’s a variety of options for us.

PwC

Why have you chosen to partner with TCV for corporate volunteering? PwC has chosen to partner with TCV once again due to our mutual commitment to addressing environmental and social challenges. As one of our biggest and most valued environmental charity partners, TCV plays a significant role in PwC’s volunteer efforts such as our biggest volunteering event, ‘One Firm One Day’ (OFOD). Together, we are able to leverage TCV’s expertise to create meaningful volunteer experiences for our people, including our summer interns and various team-based ad hoc volunteering projects. This partnership is integral to our broader mission of building trust in society and solving important problems.
What value does this initiative deliver to both your organisation and your employees? Participating in TCV’s corporate volunteering programme has been incredibly valuable for PwC and our employees. This year, around 600 of our people took part in OFOD volunteering with TCV, allowing them to develop new skills, forge stronger networks, and deepen their social awareness. For PwC, it strengthens our reputation as a responsible and engaged business. It also contributes to our total community impact, which was over £10 million in FY24 alone. By encouraging our employees to participate in volunteering, we foster a culture of responsibility and community involvement, which enhances personal development and job satisfaction.
How have you found the experience of partnering with TCV, in terms of the booking process and logistics? Working with TCV has been a seamless and productive experience. Their professionalism and dedication ensure a smooth booking process and effective management of the logistics surrounding our events. This reliable partnership allows us to focus on maximising the impact of our volunteer work, aligning with our strategic goals of creating positive social and environmental change.

Centrica

Why have you chosen to partner with TCV for corporate volunteering this year? At Centrica, we’re committed to supporting our colleagues to make a big difference in their local community through volunteering. We have pledged to deliver 100,000 days of volunteering by 2030 as part of our People and Planet Plan. In support of that, we partner with national charities that allow us to offer a variety of high-quality volunteering opportunities where we know they will have a positive impact. We have been working with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) since 2023 because of their proven track record in delivering impactful environmental projects and their alignment with Centrica’s purpose to energise a greener, fairer future.
What value does this initiative deliver to both your organisation and your employees? Our colleagues love to volunteer, and we know that it has a really positive impact on engagement and wellbeing. The events that TCV offer are very important in a hybrid working model – it allows colleagues to come together and build stronger relationships in an environment that is so different to being in an office, a virtual meeting or alone in a van. There’s also a huge sense of achievement, personal satisfaction and pride from being able to see a physical outcome of their teamwork, all while feeling connected to the impact they have in their local communities.
How have you found the experience of partnering with TCV, in terms of the booking process and logistics? Most of our Centrica colleagues work in roles that are committed to delivering a great service to our 10 million customers. This means they don’t always have time to organise their team volunteering. TCV are highly organised, which makes it easy for our employees to sign up and participate. They handle all the logistics, including risk assessments, safety briefings, and on-site coordination, allowing our teams to focus on having a fantastic experience and making a difference on the day.
