Children at a tree planting event

From the Ground Up

This year, with the very kind support of our partners at ICAP, we are launching From the Ground Up - our very first free fruit tree pack programme for primary schools across the UK!

Courtesy of ICAP, we have 500 free fruit tree packs available – each pack of 4 fruit trees is capable of creating your very own mini fruit orchard in your school.

Who can apply?

If you are a primary school in the UK, you can order one of our free fruit tree packs containing:

  • 2 x apple
  • 2 x pear

All our fruit trees are grown in the UK and will be dispatched between the 14th – 18th March 2022 ready for you to plant and will come with full planting instructions.

There will be a mix of apple and pear varieties:

  • Apple – Ellison’s Orange, Laxton’s Fortune, James Grieve, Worcester Pearmain, Greensleeves, Lord Lambourne, Sunset, Egremont Russet, Cox’s Orange Pippin , Fiesta, Pixie, Laxton’s Superb, Gala.
  • Pear varieties; Williams’ Bon Chrétien*, Beurré Hardy, Concorde*, Conference*

And this year, every single tree will be registered to The Queens Green Canopy so not only will you create your very own mini orchard – your school will also be part of the incredible Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

Every pack will be supplied with full planting instructions and TCV will also provide ongoing tips, and advice to ensure your trees stay as healthy as possible

Learning activity to stimulate classroom discussion – the fruit growing cycle

Further environmental learning around bees and pollination

Health & cooking – why fruit is good for us and appropriate recipes

Is this for your school?

We hope From the Ground Up will give many children a real opportunity to connect with nature, creating positive lifelong memories after a time when the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the life of every child in the country, with many still adjusting to a return to school.

From the Ground Up will engage and educate children in a natural outdoor classroom, by planting and nurturing their own trees ‘from the ground upwards’. They will see in real time the growing cycle – learning fruit does not actually come from a supermarket.

Children will be able to experience the sights, scents, sounds, and textures of the outdoors which every child needs to thrive. Your fruit trees can provide countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, problem-solving, and STEM education, interacting with the natural environment and by learning by doing.

Environmental and educational benefits

At TCV we would love to see more trees in schools as they provide a multitude of environmental and educational benefits, both short and long term. As well as being attractive aesthetically, they remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, enhance air quality and provide shade – all of which are beneficial for children, the environment, and wildlife.

From the Ground Up will leave a legacy for the next 50 years in schools across the UK and future generations will be able to get planting, nurturing, harvesting, and learning.

If we lose our connection with nature then we lose ourselves. I think in this day and age it is so easy to become totally divorced from the natural world, this connection is one of the greatest treasures you can have. And if you lose it, you’ve lost a really important part of your life…
