In April the West Cornwall Green Gym spent the day helping the National Trust clear Gorse from a Bronze Age barrow on Chapel Carn Brea. Often described as The First Hill in Cornwall travelling West from Lands End.
The Chapel on the summit was said to be the home of holy men.
The 12 strong band of volunteers happily battled on in the wind and certainly got their exercise walking the cut gorse down the hill all morning. The cloud lifted and treated them to magnificent views over lands end in one direction and back to St Michaels Mount in the other.
Keen birder Lionel Roberts confirmed sightings of a pair of Raven, Kestrel, Buzzard, Skylark and Swallow. “I had a really good day. It’s amazing what you see when you come out”
Paul Calvert, National Trust Ranger said “Thanks to the Green Gym volunteers for finishing the job. We started it in the winter with brushcutters and it just needed some tender loving care around the stones.”
