The Conservation Volunteers and the Ballysillan Allotment Holders Association showcased their garden at Ballysillan in warm May sunshine on Friday 25th.
Joined by over 250 local people, this event celebrated the commitment and hard work of local volunteers, giving tours of the community garden and allotments, healthy cooking demonstrations and composting workshops. The event concluded with certificate presentations and a healthy lunch made from vegetables from the Allotments – yum!
The Conservation Volunteers have transformed part of the Allotment site into a community garden, attracting over 600 volunteers in the past year.
Woking with a variety of groups and individual volunteers, the once derelict site has emerged into a thriving community garden and food growing hub.
The Conservation Volunteers are working towards replicating this successful project in other parts of Belfast and further afield. The charity plans to introduce similar green hubs throughout the UK to provide a network of community-focused environmental centres.
