Founded in November 2010 we now have a 100+ list of members and a regular group of lovely people who come to Railway Fields once a month to help with conservation tasks and plan events.
The Friends want to increase awareness of Railway Fields through events and activities. We also hope that we can educate and inspire children and adults alike to take more interest in the environment. Our monthly conservation sessions aim to help preserve and maintain the nature value of Railway Fields, keeping it a safe and friendly place for wildlife and people. Some of our members carry out a simple butterfly survey weekly between April and September the results of which are fed through to the national organisation Butterfly Conservation’s figures.
The Friends of Railway Fields meet on the last Saturday of every month to help carry out conservation work on the site. In the afternoon we have our monthly meeting to discuss arising issues and plan events. Last year for example we put on a festive Butterfly Day for families, a poetry event and a nature tour evening. Anyone can take part regardless of age and experience and everyone will have a voice within the meetings.
