TCV in Bedfordshire

Volunteers in Bedforshire

Welcome to The Conservation Volunteers in Bedfordshire – working to protect and enhance the environment across not only our home county, but also areas of Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire.

In the last 12 months our volunteers have completed 730 practical workdays on 23 sites, with tasks ranging from habitat creation to footpath clearance and waterways management to vegetable growing.

Working with local communities, our experienced project leaders provide the tools and expertise to enable volunteers to really make a difference, learning new skills along the way.

Conservation work

The Chalton Nature Group meet on Mondays and are working on a new site to manage it for nature and improve its biodiversity. This is a unique chance to watch a site evolve from neglected pasture to a thriving oasis for nature and to be part of that transformation. Transport is provided from Bedford to the site.

Our Grasslands Group meet on Tuesdays and Fridays and work at Great Stukeley SSSI, a fantastic grassland site with orchids, wildflowers and lots of wildlife to see. If you appreciate seeing a site change  year-round this groupwill suit you well. Transport is provided from Bedford to the site.

The Woodham Volunteer Group meet on Wednesdays and manage the land around the National Gas Compressor site in Woodham. With a range of habitats including woodland, meadows and hedgerows this site offers a range of activities including annual wildlife surveys. Transport is provided from Bedford to the site.

The Wymondley Nature Group meet on Thursdays and manage a 5 hectare site adjacent to Wymondley Substation. It was planted approx. 60 years ago and left to nature. Working sympathetically with the existing habitats, this rewilded gem offers the chance to help improve its biodiversity and to learn practical habitat management skills and improve your wildlife knowledge Transport is provided from Bedford to the site.

Our Environmental Action Team work on a variety of sites around Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas. Activities take place at the weekend and will be starting back up shortly so please keep checking back or contact us to be notified when projects start up.

The Bunyan Community Garden group meet on a Tuesday morning. The project started out growing fruit and vegetables, and is branching out into wildlife gardening and a wildflower nursery space as well. Sessions are on pause over the winter so please keep checking back or contact us to be notified when things start up again.

Everyone is welcome, whatever their background. All you need is suitable clothing, stout footwear, a packed lunch and enthusiasm – everything else is provided for you. Check out our programme and email k.miskin@tcv.org.uk if you’d like to join us, or if you would like to receive a monthly email reminder of our upcoming tasks.
