The Conservation Volunteers is committed to making all our communications accessible and inclusive. We follow guidance set out by UK Government when we create publications and communications, and across our websites.
As we are a charity, we are exempt from accessibility regulations. However, we continuously monitor latest guidance and we want to improve the user experience for everyone. This includes using plain language and having a responsive website so that it adjusts automatically to different sized screens and devices.
We are currently reviewing existing content against the standards set out in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. We know that older PDFs and videos do not meet the standards, so these items will be updated, added to or replaced with alternatives.
We are moving towards a digital-first approach, which means most publications will be created in HTML. Where we do need to use a PDF, we will create it to be as accessible as possible. We will make sure that all communications created in the future include:
- Image descriptions for all photographs
- Subtitles and transcripts on videos
- Colours and fonts that are easy to read on our website and publications.
