The vibrant community of Tang Hall in York is rejoicing as the National Lottery Community Fund has awarded a grant of £449,552 over the next three years. This funding will not only sustain the existing youth provision established by Tang Hall Big Local but also elevate the outdoor elements of the programme centred around Hull Road Park.
Empowering Disadvantaged Youth
The Tang Hall Youth Reaching Out initiative aims to engage disadvantaged young individuals residing in a priority area of York. Through a carefully crafted blend of indoor and outdoor sessions, this programme seeks to empower these youths, ensuring they can fulfil their potential, feel confident about their future, and foster a strong connection to their community.
“This is absolutely fantastic news and a hugely important suite of services for the young people in the east of York”
Claire Douglas, Chair Tang Hall Community Centre

A Collaborative Effort
This project represents an effective collaboration among three organisations:
- North Yorkshire Youth (NYY): NYY’s vital outreach work across the Tang Hall neighbourhood will continue their popular Youth Club sessions held every Tuesday at the Community Centre.
- Choose2 CIC: Choose2 is pivotal in supporting young adults with learning disabilities. Their active participation in the weekly sessions run by The Conservation Volunteers ensures an inclusive and supportive environment. Furthermore, the utilisation of the Choose2 cafe space during non-operational hours enhances community engagement.
- The Conservation Volunteers (TCV): As the lead applicant, TCV will expand the outdoor and environmental sessions, which have been running for over 6 years, in and around Hull Road Park. Our commitment to community engagement will continue to bring local people together for health and wellbeing and environmental volunteering sessions.
“This is a fantastic award, the messages of congratulation from local organisations show the importance the community places on the continuation of the Tang Hall youth programme.”
John Preston, TCV Business Development Leader
Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders
Beyond the core programme , the three organisations are collaboratively developing a “young leaders” initiative. This forward-thinking programme will empower young people aged 16 and above, fostering leadership skills and encouraging active involvement in community initiatives.
Hull Road Park: A Thriving Hub
Hull Road Park has been a focal point for community engagement, thanks to TCV’s consistent efforts. The expansion of activities within the park will further strengthen the sense of belonging and pride among Tang Hall residents.

Gratitude and Aspirations
A heartfelt thank you to the players of the National Lottery for making this funding possible. Their support enables us to continue the legacy of Tang Hall Big Local and provide essential services to the young people in the east of York.
“Well done to TCV, NYY and Choose2 for getting this wonderful lottery funding and being able to continue the legacy of Tang Hall Big Local“
Anna Hunter, Project Lead Tang Hall Big Local
As we gear up for the next three years, there is much to accomplish. This ambitious programme not only leaves a lasting youth legacy for Tang Hall but also sets the stage for wider public engagement. The aspiration to establish a constituted Friends of Hull Road Park will ensure the project’s sustainability beyond the summer of 2027. TCV, NYY, and Choose2 are thrilled that the Lottery has entrusted us with this mission. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for Tang Hall’s youth.
