A group of TCV volunteers have recently received a top award and been crowned ‘Local Food Heroes’ for the East Midlands region.
The awards, which are organised by RSWT and the Big Lottery, recognise the work of volunteers on Local Food projects across the country. Vicky Belcham, Project Officer for the Oadby and Wigston Community Food Champions Project, nominated the volunteers for their commitment to teaching people how to grow their own food.
The project has worked with over 1000 local people over the past 2 years, encouraging them to have a go, get stuck in and start to grow fruit and vegetables at home, in schools, and on the community allotment. The success of the project relies on the volunteers, who work tirelessly to establish a food growing culture in the area.
BBC Radio Leicester attended the awards ceremony and interviewed the Project Officer and some of the volunteers, visit www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p01cjsz6/Jim_Davis_Jims_Time_Machine/ and listen from 1.09.40 seconds to hear what they had to say.
