Exciting news this week as TCV has been selected by the Big Give for match funding through its Green Match Fund!
For one week only, any donations made to our Wild Days Out appeal will be doubled by the Big Give, enabling twice the number of young children to spend the day at one of our sites and build a connection with nature.
If you would like to see your donation doubled, please donate now:
What happens on a Wild Day Out?
A Wild Day Out gives a young child, growing up in an urban, green space deprived area, or a child with special educational needs or disabilities, the chance to build a connection with nature.
On a day out, children will get involved in a range of activities, this could be searching for mini beasts on a bug hunt and identifying the different species they uncover. Or it could be going pond dipping and finding out what pond creatures need to survive.
Days out are organised through schools and teachers talk enthusiastically about the positive impact they have on the children:
‘The children had an amazing day on their wild day out. They loved being physically active – many of them stay inside playing on technology when they’re at home so it was good to see them enthusiastic about outside. The children’s mental health was improved as they were able to engage with the activities and reflect on nature rather than their own worries or circumstances in life, and it helped them get a deeper connection with wildlife’.

Hannah Jones is an Education Project Officers and works at Railway Fields Nature Reserve in Haringey. As part of her job, she delivers Wild Days Out for local children.
Thinking about the impact Wild Days Out has on the children, Hannah says:
‘When children come to Railway Fields, they get the chance to see, hear and touch plants and wildlife. This helps them to understand about habitats and what different creatures need to survive. These are all things they learn in the classroom but when they experience them first hand, this really helps to develop their curiosity and love for the natural world, which is vital as they will be the nature conservationists of the future’.
