Help nature and local green spaces
All volunteering is good for work experience and for demonstrating to prospective employers that you are well organised, responsible and enthusiastic. But conservation volunteering with TCV is especially good if:
- You are thinking about a career in conservation and want to get some experience in the field.
- You’re trying to find the right job and want to be busy and proactive and learning new skills in the meantime.
- Or perhaps you just love nature and want to use this time to help improve your local green spaces.
As a TCV conservation volunteer, you can develop a wide range of skills that employers value, from specific practical experience to wider employability enhancements that can really give your CV a boost.
What skills can I gain?
- PRACTICAL SKILLS: Conservation tasks such as woodland management, hedge laying, scything or footpath installation; tool handling, using the right tools at the right time, adapting to different projects, following safety instructions and completing the task.
- FIELD SKILLS: Understanding more about conservation and biodiversity; learning about nature.
- TEAMWORK: Communicating, collaborating and pitching in.
- EMPLOYABILITY: Showing responsibility, reliability and punctuality.
- SELF-CONFIDENCE: Building experience, problem solving, making decisions, planning.
- MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Being part of a project that has a real impact in your community and your environment.
Where can I join in?
We have local conservation volunteering opportunities that you could join in with most weekdays, click here for the current programme. Just get in touch to complete the online registration form and let us know which day you’d like to come.
No previous experience required, we’ll be there to train and support every task. No tools or equipment required, just wear sturdy shoes and outdoor clothes. Bring a packed lunch and a bottle of water but we’ll have free tea and coffee supplies.
For best work experience impact, coming once a week for about 6 weeks really makes a mark on your CV. But in the first place, just come for one session and see how you find it.
Get a lift in the minibus
You can even get a lift in the minibus! All you need to do is get to our office on Fearon Road for 9.15am. The task day finishes about 3pm, depending on weather and task progress, and the minibus will be back on Fearon Road about 3.30/4pm.
