Bloomberg: Restoring Urban Nature and Wellbeing Through Corporate Volunteering with TCV

At The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), we’ve seen how meaningful time in nature can transform communities, boost wellbeing, and restore biodiversity. Corporate volunteering with TCV is about making a lasting difference – for nature, for communities, and for the people who take part. That’s exactly what’s happening at The Paddock, an 8-acre urban greenspace in Tottenham Hale, London, thanks to Bloomberg’s incredible support.

A greener future in the heart of London

The Paddock is a vibrant mosaic of habitats – woodland, wildflower meadows, ponds – supporting everything from hedgehogs and butterflies to peregrine falcons and rare bumblebees. Bloomberg’s sponsorship has enabled a wide-reaching programme of activities designed to connect people with nature and improve biodiversity in this vital urban corridor.

Volunteering activities have included bulb planting, sowing wildflower seeds, tree planting, mulching, swale and meadow management.

In just 6 months, together, we’ve delivered:

  • 6 corporate volunteering sessions for Bloomberg employees

Tasks have included managing 70m of wildflower swales, sowing five wildflower species, and planting and mulching 130 tree saplings for a wildlife-friendly hedgerow.

Over 12 months we have had around 100 members of the Bloomberg NEF team visit the Paddock, which has facilitated team building and connecting with the community. It’s great to see the changes to the site and help with biodiversity in the area, including by planting a range of trees we hope to come back and see grow!

  • 23 mindfulness sessions

Held during tea breaks, these sessions helped volunteers slow down and connect with the sights and sounds of nature.

After our lunch discussion re Wellbeing and mental health … I have to admit I was a bit surprised that you had brought this up with the conservation group … I mentioned this to a group of male friends in the pub that evening after watching the football … what followed was an equally surprising discussion between us all around personal experiences of anxiety and depression … can’t say we have ever ventured into discussions like that before.

  • 5 school activity sessions

Engaging 138 children through bug hunts, bird walks, and nature-spotting games.

All surveys were super engaging! Very organised. I enjoyed the bird survey the most, the children worked so hard trying to spot birds! Loved the whole workshop – thanks!!

  • 4 weekend events for families

Including a winter tree workshop, insect BioBlitz (citizen science biological surveying), and folklore-themed nature walks.

Thanks so much for a great workshop. I loved being in such a special place, which gave me a real sense of wellbeing, and I learnt a lot. You pitched the information at just the right level for me, as a beginner, and you made it really interactive. Seeing a woodpecker and a peregrine falcon was a lovely, unexpected bonus!

  • 23 midweek practical conservation days

Volunteers cleared over 700m of path network, managed pollinator-friendly meadows, cared for woodland areas, and planted over 400 bulbs. Bringing better nature for all in the local community.

An intercity gem… can you believe this ‘forest’, as my 2-year-old calls it, is a short walk from Tottenham Hale station?

This kind of feedback is particularly rewarding. The Paddock was once a neglected site and a hotspot for anti-social behaviour – a place people told us they were afraid to visit. Thanks to Bloomberg’s support and the local volunteer team, it’s now a space that retains its wild charm while welcoming people from all walks of life. Whether visiting alone, socially, or with children, the community now sees The Paddock as a place to relax, connect, and explore.

Bloomberg’s funding has helped us continue this mission by supporting ‘boots on the ground’ – the volunteers and staff who care for the site day in, day out. It’s keeping The Paddock a real gem, and a place people want to return to.

Working with Bloomberg has been a very rewarding experience for TCV staff at the Paddock. Through their funding of our activities, we have been able to reach a diverse section of the community through our school activities and volunteering events. Through engaging in nature, this has led to lasting benefits for both volunteers’ health and wellbeing, as well as the benefit to the site’s biodiversity and wild spaces.

Why it matters – now and into the future

Corporate volunteering with TCV delivers tangible benefits:

  • Employee wellbeing through nature connection and mindfulness
  • Environmental impact via habitat restoration and biodiversity support
  • Team building through shared purpose and outdoor collaboration
  • Urban biodiversity in areas where nature is most needed

The Bloomberg employees who have come to our monthly corporate days have been great sports! Throughout rain and sunshine, they have come along, got stuck into conservation tasks, and shown us how to make a big difference on the day.

Connecting People with Purpose

Bloomberg’s continued involvement means we can keep building on this success – creating greener, healthier spaces for communities and wildlife alike. These contributions at The Paddock are part of a much bigger picture – one where communities across the UK are coming together to restore biodiversity and connect with nature.
